The Crown Jewel: A Confirmed Robbins Type 2A Eagle Scout Medal

The Robbins Type 2A is universally recognized as the most finely crafted Eagle Scout medal ever produced. Made by the Robbins Company for only four months in late 1930, the Type 2A features engraving that has never been equaled — with extraordinarily detailed feathering on both the obverse and reverse, clearly visible knuckles on the talons, and the diagnostic V-shaped back where the body meets the tail feathers. This brief production window and unmatched craftsmanship make the 2A one of the most desirable types for serious BSA collectors.

This example retains its original coffin box with “EAGLE SCOUT BADGE / AWARDED BY THE / BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA” inscription in the lid, satin and felt lining intact. The medal shows “BSA” on the eagle’s chest, a closed beak, and the red/white/blue ribbon with age-appropriate patina consistent with a nearly century-old sterling silver award.

22 Rare Merit Badges on Original Sash

The tan merit badge sash carries 22 trimmed and crimped merit badges from the earliest era of BSA badge production (circa 1911–1936), most likely earned between 1929 and 1936. Identified badges include:

Weather (1929–1933), Reptile Study (1926–1933), Safety (1927–1933), Leatherworking (1911–1933), Animal Industry (1928–1933), Marksmanship (1911–1933), Physical Development (1920–1933), First Aid to Animals (1911–1933), Bird Study (1914–1933), Firemanship (1911–1933), Reading (1929–1933), Pathfinding (1911–1933), Pioneering (1911–1933), Personal Health (1911–1933), Civics (1911–1933), Leathercraft (1927–1933), Swimming (1911–1933), Lifesaving (1915–1933), Public Health (1911–1933), Camping (1911–1933), First Aid (1911–1933), and Cooking (1911–1933).

Several of these badges had short production windows — Weather, Reading, and Animal Industry were only produced for 4–5 years — making them individually scarce and collectively remarkable on a single sash.

Additional Items Included

  • Senior Scouting patch (circa 1935–1949) — loose
  • Explorer Scout patch — gold eagle on dark background with green border
  • Assistant Field Commissioner patch (1931–1969) — beautifully embroidered “Be Prepared” in laurel wreath

Provenance

Every piece in this collection traces to a single Eagle Scout’s career from the early 1930s. The badges, medal, patches, and accessories were preserved together — an increasingly rare survival that documents one young man’s complete journey to Scouting’s highest rank during the Golden Age of the Boy Scouts of America.

Condition: All pieces are in very good to excellent condition considering their age (90+ years). The merit badges retain strong color and clear embroidery. The medal shows appropriate age patina on the sterling silver. The coffin box is intact with original lining.
