This set captures a historic moment in American numismatics. In 2021, the United States Mint introduced a new reverse design for the American Gold Eagle series for the first time since 1986, while simultaneously refining the iconic Saint-Gaudens obverse to more closely reflect the sculptor’s original artistic vision.
The original reverse, designed by Miley Busiek Frost and sculpted by Sherl J. Winter, features a male eagle carrying an olive branch in flight above a nest with a female eagle and eaglets. The new reverse, designed by Jennie Norris of the Artistic Infusion Program and sculpted by Medallic Artist Renata Gordon, presents a striking new portrayal of an eagle.
Both obverse faces carry the celebrated Saint-Gaudens full-length figure of Liberty with flowing hair, torch in right hand and olive branch in left — with the 2021 redesigned coin featuring an updated rendering drawn from the Mint’s original historical assets for greater fidelity to Saint-Gaudens’ intent.
Each coin contains 1/10 troy ounce of 22-karat gold (91.67% gold, 3% silver, 5.33% copper). The set includes the original US Mint black presentation case, illustrated outer sleeve showcasing both reverse designs, and individually numbered Certificate of Authenticity (#4553 of 5,000).
Condition: Original mint packaging, never handled, professionally stored since acquisition. Both coins remain in their original US Mint capsules.
